Without a paddle

Without a paddle is a slightly deifferent film compared to that of American pie and Ferris Buellers day off but has the same conventions. It involves 3 young males embarking on an adventure into the amazon. The film begins by introducing all three of the charachters, cutting between short seens of them. This established the 3 characters personas. We have taken this idea and used it withing our own short film opening through having each of the characters acting distinctively differently. We have taken the idea from without a paddle by usinng a macho, stern character, a silly, strange charachter and a posh charachter.
The part of this film which is not similar to that of the others is that what they were is not distinguishably different but in ours we have used our costumes and props to a real effect as previously stated in out film proposal.

Film Proposal
For our practical production we will be filming the opening to a teen comedy. We researched into other film genres but felt that we would be able to apply our knowlege and experience to teen comedy best. To ensure that out opening meets the conventions we will be using:
*Non diagetic indie music at some point : This will be made on garage band but will give the film a friendly and uplifting feel compelling the audience to watch further.
*Distinguishable characters : This will be shown through the use of costumes and acting. We have chosen to use tough, silly and posh charchter persona's so that the charachters are seen as a group of friends that come from different backgrounds yet are still friends. Adding to the feel of a Teen comedy.
*Slapstick humour : This aspect of our genre will be essential as it is possibly the easiest laughs to get if executed well. We have chosen to use our silly character to perform most of the slapstick actions so that it gives our film some form of continuity. We have chosen simple actions such as spraying deoderant into he eye and tripping over kurbs to distinguishably show that the character is a bit of a stray.

American Pie

- The film opens with Jim, similar to Ferris Bueller, talking directly into the camera in a mishot. This allows the audience to interact with him immediately. He then speaks with non-diagetic american music, such as blink 182 playing in the background once again allowing interaction.
- The opening continues with Jim walking to school from a long shot. The shows his attire and he is dressed similar to how many teenagers dress this once again appeals to their target audience. The camera then pans, whilst still in a longshot and white picket fences and big houses are seen, this is stereotypical of America.
- Jim then meets his friends, they meet with an informal hand shake, representing themselves as just average teenage friends. This continues throughout with once again non-diagetic music playing in the background and this cements in the audiences mind that they can relate to these people.
- Finally there is an establishing shot of the front of the school that they are about to attend it shows the film cuts to several different faces of attractive girls. They are cheerleaders and this complies with the stereotypical american teen life. The opening ends with them walking into the school as a group of friends.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

The Film starts with Ferris talking to the camera, this makes the audience feel involved in the film and feel apart of it. We assume this boy to be the main character because of the way hes acting and the confidence within him. We can tell hes trying to 'bunk off' school because hes talking about ways to make your parents think you have a fever! This is a good indication to the audience that the film is for teenagers. There is non-diagetic music in the back ground, this music indicates his day is going to be a bit mad, full on and full of adventure. This is a common characteristic of a 'teen comedy'. The comedy aspect of the film becoms clear when he enters the shower and creates a mohekan with his wet hair another comic aspect of it is when he sings into the shower head. All of these details portray the conventions of a 'teen comedy'.
