American Pie

  • The film opens with Jim, similar to Ferris Bueller, talking directly into the camera in a mishot. This allows the audience to interact with him immediately. He then speaks with non-diagetic american music, such as blink 182 playing in the background once again allowing interaction.
  • The opening continues with Jim walking to school from a long shot. The shows his attire and he is dressed similar to how many teenagers dress this once again appeals to their target audience. The camera then pans, whilst still in a longshot and white picket fences and big houses are seen, this is stereotypical of America.
  • Jim then meets his friends, they meet with an informal hand shake, representing themselves as just average teenage friends. This continues throughout with once again non-diagetic music playing in the background and this cements in the audiences mind that they can relate to these people.
  • Finally there is an establishing shot of the front of the school that they are about to attend it shows the film cuts to several different faces of attractive girls. They are cheerleaders and this complies with the stereotypical american teen life. The opening ends with them walking into the school as a group of friends.
